AI and data

AI only when you request it

Here is what may leave your device when you scan a meal, ask PURPOSE or look up a barcode.

Meal analysis

Meal analysis may use Google Gemini or OpenAI.

Can send
Your selected food photo, description and notes to generate a nutrition estimate. AI Scan is optional and requires permission for AI features.
Not automatically included
Your date of birth, reflections, progress photos and Ask PURPOSE conversations.

Ask PURPOSE

Ask PURPOSE may use Google Gemini or OpenAI.

Can send
Your message and recent conversation to generate a reply. If you turn on Personalize replies (Personalization), limited information about your goals, recent progress and relevant saved memories may also be included. AI chat requires permission for AI features.
Not automatically included
Your steps, active calories, date of birth, reflections, meal photos and progress photos.

Barcode lookup

Barcode lookup may use Open Food Facts.

Can send
The barcode you choose to look up so PURPOSE can find food and nutrition information.
Not automatically included
Photos, journal entries, reflections and Ask PURPOSE messages.

Choose what you share

AI Scan and Ask PURPOSE require explicit AI permission. Turn AI features off in Settings to stop new requests. Buying a subscription or allowing camera access does not give AI permission.

Personalization is off by default. It can add goals, recent progress and relevant memories to Ask PURPOSE, including your calorie goal after Offset Burn. It never adds steps, active calories, birthday, reflections or photos. Anything you type in a question is still sent.

Conversations are temporary. Memories expire after 7 days; delete them sooner in Settings. Turning Personalization off stops new memory learning and sharing. Providers may retain submitted information under their own terms. See retention details.

Nutrition-label reading, Today’s totals, Next Step and reports work on your phone. Review estimates before saving or relying on them. AI replies and nutrition estimates are not medical advice.
